Limousines are longer than normal vehicles that fall in the luxury vehicle category. There are a variety of different limousines on the market today that can be purchased for a business or rented for a special evening. Manufacturers can turn almost any form of motor vehicle into a limousine these days as well. Limousines are used for fun and excitement as well as sad occasions such as funerals. Limousines are also used for weddings, business meetings, concerts, birthdays, anniversaries, going to the ballgame, heading to the airport or even going to and from work.
Limousines are manufactured as luxury cars, luxury sedans, and luxury SUVs. The majority of them are painted in black or grey color but some can be custom painted to fit a company’s needs such as white limousines for weddings. Limousines are driven by chauffeurs and were usually associated with the wealthy up until the 1990s. Limousines are also used by governments to transport officials. Some of the most well known limousines are the ones that carry the President of the United States, his staff, his family and secret service members.
The very first limousine was built in 1902 and was painted in black. The first stretch limousine was built in the United States in 1928 in Fort Smith, Arkansas by the company named Armbruster. The first stretch limousines were used to transport big band leaders such as Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman. The vehicles were large enough to also transport the band and the band’s equipment. They were also known as “big band buses.”
There are a handful of different limousines available today. They are traditional, modern limousines, stage, exotic limousines and novelty limousines. The traditional limousine is just an extension of a vehicle and can hold five to seven people in the back of the vehicle. Modern limousines include the Hummer H2, the Maybach 62, the Cadillac DTS and the Lincoln Town Car Edition. These modern limousines are usually stretch limousines and can carry anywhere from five to 15 people, not including the driver.
A stage limousine is one that is not a traditional limousine but is a cross between a sedan and a bus. It is also known as a stagecoach. A stagecoach, unlike a bus, does not have a middle aisle for passengers to get in and out of the bus with but it has doors up and down the vehicle to get in and out that way. A couple of examples of novelty stretch limousines that fit the stagecoach category are the Hummer and the Hummer H2. Some funeral homes in the United States use the stagecoach type of limousine to transport the family of a deceased person to and from the cemetery.
Exotic limousines are limousines that are considered the ultimate stretch limousine. These limousines have exuberant features such as a hot tub and can transport 10 to 20 people at a time not including the driver. They are manufactured by Audi, Jaguar, Lexus, Chrysler, Ford and more. The final type of limousines around today is the novelty limousine. The novelty limousine is a car that has been inappropriately converted into a limousine.
