Protein shakes: What they are, what they do and how to use them

Protein shakes, as the name would suggest, contain high amounts of protein. However, there are other ingredients included such as flavourings and enhancers to make them taste better. In addition, there are often carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals too.

They are specifically designed to help the body build muscle, by increasing the process known as muscle protein synthesis. Taken after a workout, muscles are able to be repaired quicker, whilst the body has greater flexibility which enables it to use carbohydrates in the best possible, most efficient way.

Though the latest generation of protein shakes are better than what has gone before, mixing them with fresh soft fruits and berries will give them a great deal more flavour and appeal. Further than this, fruit itself contains many more carbs, beneficial antioxidants and essential fibres, sugars and so on.

Taken as part of a healthy diet, these protein shakes can all add to creating a body which both looks and feels great inside and out. It is important to understand their place as supplements however, rather than replacements which should not be the case.
