Paintballing; the New Outdoor Pursuit in Newcastle

Paintballing is an outdoor team sport which is played in a variety of settings which have freestanding features such as trees and bunkers which can be used as for tactics such as hiding and sneaking. Paintballing has been popular for many years and for a variety of reasons such as teambuilding days, corporate events, family days out and hen and stag parties. With it’s thriving bar and club scene Paintballing in Newcastle is marketed as the starting point of a day or weekend of fun and frivolity.

Equipment

Although the actual equipment used will depend on the player, level of gamesmanship involved and the potential desire to rise to the top of the field there are three main pieces of equipment which are needed; a specially designed gun, known as a Paintball Marker which fires out pellets using either compressed air or carbon dioxide as a propellant, the paintballs themselves which are typically spherical gelatine balls filled with non-toxic paint designed in such a way that they are almost certain to break on impact and the final piece of equipment is the goggles or other form of masked protection.

In the UK there are legal provisions relating to the age of players, the power of the Marker and the safety regulations which must be adhered to and the organised industry is heavily regulated and scrutinised.

The Gameplay

Although the rules and regulations of a game or tournament differ dramatically between areas and levels of aptitude the general rules relate to a player or team accomplishing or completing a task or reaching a specific place without being hit by the opposing team. Different clubs, teams, organisations and individuals generally have different goals or ways of going about the main reason for play and it is generally accepted that as long as the rules are agreed prior to playing “anything goes”.

Controversy

Although paintballing generally has a bad reputation for danger and potential health threats, its injury levels are actually surprisingly low, with a US study showing that out of every 100,000 participants an average 45 sustained injury beyond bruising. The sport has also been received negative attention after reports of paintballing being used to practise tactical combat in the training of terrorists and their organisations.
