Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions

Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions are fun

Outline

These expeditions are part of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award that can be taken at three levels, gold, silver and bronze. The activities are for the age group 14-24 and must be completed by the participant’s 25th birthday. The courses will run over a period of 1 -4 years depending on the options that you choose. On an annual basis around 275,000 people in the UK are participating at any one time. The charity was established in 1959 under the patronage of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and has gone from strength to strength.

What does the course consist of?

There are four areas that constitute the award programme and these are volunteering, physical, skills and expedition.

The volunteering section is where the charitable influence kicks in, as the participant is to undertake service to individuals or the community.

In the physical section the emphasis is on sport, dance or fitness.

Skills will allow you to address you social interaction and associated personal interests.

Expedition is the truly hard work and fun part, where you undertake an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad. This may be in Cairngorms, Snowdonia or Peru. You have a broad choice of where to undertake the expedition, but wherever you choose, it will be tough. You will of course be under the supervision of experienced adult leaders.

If you wish to achieve the Gold Award then there is a fifth section to be completed and that is a residential period, where you will reside away from home and partake in a shared activity.

There are time limits placed on each section and you will be monitored as you progress by someone who is nominated by the scheme, and who has sound knowledge of the task you are undertaking.

Why do the Award?

The whole purpose of the award is to give you a sense of self worth and to allow you to contribute to the community as a whole, and to understand the part that particular elements play. As the award is open to all you may have the opportunity to work alongside of those who are physically or mentally challenged.
