International phone cards allow you to speak to who you like, as and when you like, and for a great deal less than it will cost you to contact those same people by any other means. In the majority of cases, it can actually be cheaper to call loved ones from abroad with calling cards than it would be to call them from your own mobile phone at home.
On top of international calling cards, there are all manner of gadgets that can help people on their travels, but many of these can also be targets for theft. However, it is worth remembering that mobile phones do a great deal more than just allow you to call people and, as such, these all-in-one devices are usually a must, many times being the perfect way to help travellers get out of a bind. Kindles can also be a great way to ensure you have all the books you could ever need on your travels, whilst taking up almost no room in your backpack.
Finally, make sure you always have a notepad. Cameras are all good and well, but the right mobile will have a camera that is more than adequate. However, the real memories will be your words and by writing down a journal, you are far more likely to be able to relive those intricate memories for many years to come.
