Journalist shows off her new smile

An increasing number of people are making the most of adult braces as a means of enhancing their smiles and many of these make use of an orthodontist in London.

One woman who has benefited from treatment of this kind is journalist Alice Smellie. Writing in the Daily Mail, she noted that she had been treated when she was a teenager, but in the past, people were not automatically given retainers to keep their teeth in check afterwards.

About this, she stated: “Sure enough, by my late 20s, my teeth had started to cave in again. In my wedding photos, my smile is marred by the two vast tombstones swallowing up half of my lower lip. By my mid-30s, I looked like Nanny McPhee.”

This was also caused by the changing shape of her face, she pointed out. Explaining this, a top dentist remarked: “As we age, the lower jaw shrinks, pushing the teeth closer in together and crowding them. The facial muscles change in tone and start to droop – in turn changing muscle pressure on teeth – which forces them to become crooked. With a misaligned bite, teeth will grind and chip away at each other, crack and decay.

Ms Smellie opted for a special form of adult braces that achieves impressive results in very little time.

Commenting on her verdict about the treatment when it had been completed, she revealed she was “thrilled” with the results. She added that for the first time in years, she was able to smile with confidence.
