People who are on the lookout for Broadway tickets may be interested to note that one production is set to make its way from the west coast to Broadway for the 2012-13 season. Hands on a Hardbody opened on May 12th in the San Diego coastal suburb of La Jolla and its producers have announced that the show will move to Broadway for the 2012-13 season.
Dates and casting for the shows are yet to be announced, but there may well be plenty of interest among consumers who compare ticket prices online.
Based on an unusual quirky 1997 documentary of the same name created by S R Binder and Kevin Morris, the show focuses on the contestants of a car dealership contest in which competitors must keep at least one hand on the body of a truck for as long as possible. The person left at the end can drive the vehicle away. A total of ten contestants line up for the prize at the Texan dealership
Music for the production was scored by Trey Anastasio and Amanda Green created the lyrics.
Meanwhile, the musical is directed by Neil Pepe and it features staging by Benjamin Millepied. The cast at the La Jolla Playhouse featured Keith Carradine, Hunter Foster and Allison Case.
Commenting on the production, LA Times critic Charles McNulty said: “This is a Red State musical that Blue State audiences won’t hate themselves for enjoying.”
He also noted that the show contains the themes of romance, friendship and endurance, among others.
The reviewer went on to remark: “There’s a refreshing emotional simplicity to this story that’s been genially adapted to the stage by Doug Wright.”
