What to See on a Tanzanian Safari

Kenya safaris often centre around the great annual migration of wildebeest and zebra which takes place during the country’s ‘winter’, from July to October. Another African country which is also good to visit on safari is Tanzania because the northern section of its Serengeti National Park meets the Maasai Mara National Reserve where this Kenyan migration takes place. Nevertheless, this is actually the least visited area of the Serengeti. At the height of the migratory season, this area of the Park is home to millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelles, as well as all the big cats we associated with African safaris.

The name ‘Serengeti’ comes from the Maasai word ‘serengit’, meaning land of endless plains. This description is best applied to the southern/central part of the Park, which is also the most popular section. Most of the Park’s accommodation can be found in this area and this section is also where you would find the Seronera Valley, which has several rivers running through it all year round, making it a popular home for wildlife. The Seronera Valley is generally considered the best area of Africa for seeing the large predators such as the lion, hyena, leopard and cheetah. During the dry season (July to October), you can also find high concentrations of buffalo, hippo, warthog, and giraffe.

Another famous feature of Tanzania is Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and the largest freestanding mountain in the world. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is notoriously difficult, however, due to the extreme temperatures and other high altitude affects.
