Take, for example, the most familiar survival garment for anybody venturing out in boats or ships, the life jacket, which is made from foam. This particular item has been designed to hold an unconscious person in the water afloat and make sure that his or her nose and mouth are kept clear of the water so they don’t drown while waiting for search and rescue services to find them. As both the collar and floatation parts of the life jacket are designed to be asymmetric, this design will turn a person automatically onto his or her back and the collar ensures the head is kept stable. Suits for immersion survival are used by many people involved in activities where sudden immersion in cold water is a possibility, especially rescue teams and most of the occupations of a commercial nature in marine environments. This particular type of survival garment will typically have a work suit and a survival and immersion suit.
The dry suit part of the clothing will protect the person from the risk of hypothermia for an extended period of time, meaning the person is more likely to be rescued alive even if it takes the search and rescue team a while to find him or her, especially in the dark or in adverse weather conditions, fog and rain being particularly difficult.
