Renovating bathrooms simply

Of all the rooms in the house, the bathroom suites and the kitchen tend to stay the most unchanged over time. When a house is sold the new owners tend to change the carpets and the furniture, repaint the walls and bring in new appliances like a fridge and washing machine. Minor renovations don’t take more than one room out of commission at a time so they don’t create much of an inconvenience, and in most cases they don’t take long or cost much.

Kitchens and bathrooms take more effort for two reasons. First of all, there are heavy fixtures that are just that- fixed. To change a bath or a shower you need to take out the old one (often destroying it in the process) and deal with the plumbing. To change an oven you need a professional to take care of the gas or electrical hookup and again, getting rid of the old one isn’t easy. Second, both the kitchen and bathroom are usually in constant use. Not having access to either one makes life much more difficult.

However, if you don’t like your current bathroom there is plenty that can be done without redoing the whole room. Bathroom suites can be repainted like any other room and smaller things are easy to replace. Changing the tap and shower fittings can usually be done by a keen DIY enthusiast, for example. The same is true of bathroom cabinets and although that is a bigger job it’s often still possible to use the room whilst it’s underway.

Installing extras is another way to make bathrooms your own. That means towel rails, soap dishes and dispensers, and every one of the accessories you choose will contribute to the overall style of the room and how you feel about it. Anyone can have a bathroom they love without the fuss and expense of a full renovation!
